Cover Concept

But you have to excuse my bad english - it´s not se yellow from se egg ;) (Ich habe erst später die faszinierende Welt der KI-Übersetzer entdeckt;D)

Cover Concept „Watch of Souls“ (Toma Nguyen)

Story

The story is settled in Omphalos, the town in the middle of Terra. It is a normal big town with a lot of mysteries and magic below the surface – and a whole lot of other unknown worlds above and below. The world of Terra and the tree of worlds, of which Terra is a part, are involved in an old war between the council of 13 (evil) and the council of 7 (good). In every book of the series, one or more young protagonists get involved in this battle of which they can´t see all the rules and processes.

In this first book, Caligari, the evil head of the council of 13, helps Limus to find the watch of souls. Scelus, Caligari´s adversary in the council of 13, tries to kill Limus. With this watch, Limus can transport his soul into the body of other animals, humans and entities. Limus is thrilled by the power he gains and abuses it. But his friend Florian tries to help him to get on the right side. Especially Senibe, one of the council of 7, tries to help too. But when Limus stalks Valerie by getting into her cat, Florian can no longer accept this and he tries to stop Limus.

After a big finale, in which Limus tries to take revenge on the school, the pupils and the teachers, he is finally defeated – or so it seems…

1. Front Cover

The cover is split in two with a black line. The left side has a black background, the right side a white. It could have an aquarellistic touch so it doesn´t seem like a simple black and white surface.
The people on the left side are more covered in shadow.

Visual elements of the cover

1 – Bakaneko: A magical cat of which only the big yellow eyes can be seen glowing in the dark.

2 – Muspel: Proud father of Scelus at which he looks proudly down on the cover. He is a big, massive man, with a fire-red beard which seems to burn. All his clothing is firy, red and gold. He has big red eyebrows and big, large teeth. He poses his weighty hands on the shoulders of his son Scelus. Some fire sparks come out of his mouth.

3 – Scelus: Son of Muspel, highly intelligent and one of the most skilled magicians with the main ability to create the Eternal Ice surrounding the fortress of the council of 13. He is very confident and has no problem killing an innocent. He has black, pointy hair, a pale face, but very blue eyes, like ice or clear water. Like his father he wears red and gold clothing and on his golden belt buckle, a dragon is to be seen. He stands there with crossed arms. He looks right in the face of the reader.

4 – Derek: He´s the main mobber in the school. He comes from XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. He always wears branded clothes, very expensive, and claims that he stole them. He has muscles, he´s a big guy. His face is the face of a criminal, ugly, squared/angular. He stands there with crossed arms. He looks angry / malevolent at Limus.

5 – Frau Löwenzahn: She´s a XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, but she seems like a nice, old lady and is the housekeeper in Florian´s house. She wears a simple brown dress and a white apron of lace. Her hair is grey, more white. She helds a spray bottle in one hand because with the other hand, she holds a cloth to clean Sarolf´s stone head.

6 – Sarolf´s stone head: Sarolf is Limus´ ancestor, a lord and knight and seems to have been a cruel man. In the cover, we only see his stone head, a part of a big statue in his crypt. On his forehead is engraved a stone rose!!!

7 – Neanta: She is the symbol of depression, nothingness, the meaninglessness of the world. Very untidy, greasy hair, a face like a pale full moon, very round, and empty, tired eyes that seem not interested in anything at all. She looks the reader right in the face.

8 – Caligari: Head of the Council of 13. Very confident, cruel. He can manipulate the will of the people. He´s wearing well-cutted black clothes, a little bit like a magician on stage would wear. Everything on his body and in his face is gaunt. He has black hair in a more old-fashioned way. He has sharp teeth. The most important thing in his face are the eyes: yellow and hypnotic, a little bit like the eyes of a snake. With a malevolent grin, he looks down on Limus and holds his shoulder.

9 – Limus: Limus, living in a zoo, which he hates, is a dissatisfied young boy bullied in school, ignored by the girls and always convinced that nobody loves him, which is not true. On the beginning, he is the protagonist, but a switch will come and Florian will be the good protagonist. When he finds the watch of souls, he develops a lust for power, stalks the girl he loves (Valerie) by being in her cat and – in the finale – overtakes the school and trys to take revenge on some pupils and teachers. On the other side, he doesn ´t want to be that evil, he fears Caligari and has not the strength to kill the one teacher.
Limus has brown hair like mud which is untidy. He´s pale. His eyes are deep brown, they can even seem black. I´m not sure about his clothes, but his parents work in the zoo they own, so I suppose he is clothed like a normal guy, not too fancy. One half of his body and face (on the left side of the cover) is more shadowy.
I want him to look at Valerie, but in a shy way, but his face has also a little piece of brutality. He really likes her, but does not know how to tell her, so he stalked her.

10 – Watch of Souls: A magic object with which you can switch your soul with an other animal, human or entity. It´s made of gold and consists of a lot of metallic ribbons intertwined with one another which can be moved with the help of some buttons in the middle of the watch which can be pushed or turned. All the ribbons are subdivided into squares in which magic, hermetic symbols are engraved.
It has a green, eerie glow.

11 – Florian: He´s a nice guy, very interested in bees and especially in knowing everything that exists. He looks a little bit like an angel (but don ´t exaggerate😊). So: blond, a not too much curly hair, blue eyes, and he´s wearing glasses. He´s wearing a T-shirt with a lot of green leafs (symbol of the tree of worlds!!!). He looks at Limus, holds his shoulder with one hand, and he does not look concerned, but more optimistic and encouraging, he smiles.
On his hand touching Limus´ shoulder sits a bee.

12 – Valerie´s cat: A black cat hissing at Limus and lifting a paw to scratch him.

13 – Valerie: Deep-blue eyes, long curly blond hair, a beautiful person. She holds an old roll in her hand, because she is very interested in old history. She looks Limus´ right in the eye, but with a severe, opposing look, because she knows now that he stalked her and cuddled with her in the form of her cat. She was very injured and shocked by this. She is very courageous and clear-minded.

14 – Blue Beetle: It is one of Scelus´ eyes with which he can see everything the beetle sees. It´s blue and shiny.

15 – Senibe: A black woman which helps other people whenever she can and with a great sense of empathy – and magic. She has a beautiful face, black hair (but I don´t know how it has to be to fit her character). She´s wearing a green dress full of green feathers. The green is of the colour of an emerald and very bright. She wears a precious, golden neckless in form of snakes intertwined (it helps when you don´t want to be manipulated by magic) She looks at Limus, she´s very concerned about him. She lifts one hand a little bit as if she wants to touch him, but she´s very unsure how to help him, so the hand is just lifted a little bit.

16 – Limus´ mother + 17 – Limus´ father: Limus´ parents, ordinary people that love her son very much, but don´t know how to communicate with him and how to overcome his hatred against them. They did not do anything wrong. They work in a zoo, so they ought to be dressed that way, with some mud splashs on their clothing. Her hand and arm positioning is like on picture 2. They both look at Limus with a concerned look in which you can feel the love for him. I can´t say more about her faces, they are ordinary, that´s all I know.

18 – Madame Papillon: She masters the art of reading and manipulating others minds, but she does it for the best of humanity. She´s more like a good psychotherapist. She has beautiful arranged, brown hair with one or more shiny, precious butterfly hairslides in it, and has a beautiful, sympathic face. Her clothing has the colours of a beautiful butterfly.
She lifts one arm and on this hand is a snail (with a house). Very important, because the snail is my trademark.
Butterflies flew of her hand, and behind her is a very big butterfly with big eyes on his wings (so there is a symmetry with the eyes of the Bakaneko).

19 – Homunculus: He´s the "son" of Caligari and is always kept in a glass with a luminous, yellow liquid in it. Looks like a normal, thin human, but very, very little. He waves his hand at the reader and smiles in a sympathic way.

Text on the cover

The text on the cover is black or white letters depending on which background they are seen (white letters on black, black letters on white)

Die Chroniken von Omphalos
Die Seelenuhr

Because it´s part 1, a big „1“ is included in the „O“ of „Omphalos“
I haven´t found a good font for the text☹ Perhaps you can find one. I want it to be as special as Harry Potters font. I want the readers to see this font and to immediately think about the Chronicles of Omphalos.
(Info: Ich habe mich nachher für die Schriftart entschieden, die auch im Buch für die Kleinbuchstaben verwendet wurde: Die großen Buchstaben als Lime Glory Caps, die kleinen als Garamond.)

2. Book Spine

When all of the 19 parts of the book are put on the book shelf side by side, they will form the trunk of the tree of worlds (see picture 1).
On the book spine of this first book, you only see below a lower part of the tree of worlds, especially his roots. The rest is just black cosmos with some white stars.
In a white circle is a „1“ to show it´s the first part of the story.

3. Back Cover

The book cover is a continuation of the black cosmos with the white stars from the book spine.
In the middle is a white box (see picture 1) in which the book´s abstract is written.
In the left corner below: The constellation of Perseus – fine, white lines are connecting the white stars together.
In the right corner above: The constellation of Libra – fine, white lines are connecting the white stars together. (Take only the stars connected with the red lines)
